After scooping vegan capital of the world status from Chef’s Pencil in 2022, vegans everywhere are flocking to the fair city of Brighton & Hove for vegan restaurants, cafes, pubs and places to eat vegan food.

Brighton Pier

Whether you’re looking for vegan pizza, vegan fast food or vegan fine dining in Brighton & Hove, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Purezza

The first ever vegan pizza restaurant in the UK, Purezza’s ethical and environmentally-conscious menu aims to replicate traditional Italian cuisine using local, sustainable and plant-based ingredients.

With starters such as Cheesy Garlic Sourdough, Courgetti Spaghetti and Dough Balls, it’s going to leave little room for the wholegrain or hemp based pizza mains such as The One With The Pesto, The One That’s Telling Porkies, The Carbonara One, The Marinara One or The One With All The Seasons. Folded pizza fans will appreciate the Couch Potato Calzone packed with molten cheese, pepperoni, potatoes, wild forest mushrooms and hot maple sauce.

For dessert you can choose from sweet vegan treats such as The Chocolate One (pizza with chocolate spread, ice cream and white chocolate crumble), New York Cheesecake, Salted Caramel Brownie and Gelato.

If you have kids in toe and they’re under 11, they get to eat for free. There’s even a separate dog menu with The Ultimutt Meal Deal including a pizza slice of Pupperoni or Furentina and doggie drink.

Botanique

Botanique is a bountiful vegan fine dining restaurant on Western Road in Brighton & Hove with a hyper seasonal produce focus.

Building their very own indoor hydroponic farm across the road from the restaurant, not only means herbs, vegetables and aromatics are grown mere metres from where the dishes are served but the sustainable urban garden doubles as a stunning cocktail venue. Also working closely with independent local farmers and small European producers, the menu is centred around the vegetables to create innovative and beautiful dishes with an abundance of flavours and textures.

Delightful dishes featuring beetroot with miso glaze, pistachio crumb, pickled blackberry and beet puree, as well as celeriac with rose harissa, ras el hanout, preserved lemon gel and pomegranate can be found amongst the small plates.

Whilst large plates of charred aubergine masala with kefir coconut cream, labneh, lime pickle aioli, nigella hemp seed, along with a dish centred around oyster and shimeji mushrooms with enoki fritter, fava bean puree, samphire, beet top marmalade, truffle and caper dressing make it very difficult to choose.

Desserts include chocolate mousse with dehydrated raspberry and deconstructed blood orange cheesecake.

There’s also separate daytime, weekend brunch and Sunday roast menus to explore so you can enjoy a new experience every time you visit.

Kusaki

Kusaki is a vegan Japanese restaurant in the heart of Brighton & Hove on a mission to provide pure, plant-powered meals that are good for the body. Led by chefs with Michelin Star prowess, Kusaki’s creative approach invites guests to experience a different way of eating vegetables full of new flavours and textures.

Set in a tranquil traditional Japanese garden interior with a futuristic twist, the Asian inspired plant based menu has a selection of small plates such as Aubergine Dengaku with roasted aubergine coated in traditional dengaku glaze and peanut crumb, whilst the Inari Tsumi is a dish of tofu pockets filled with either sushi rice, sesame and miso chickpeas, pickled celery and chilli or sushi rice, burnt leeks, leek cream and pickled apple.

Large plates don’t disappoint with Ramen, Bao Buns, Stir Fried Noodles and Kiiro, a Katsu inspired curry. Plus an array of Sushi and Sashimi including the Kusaki signature selection of Sashimi Nigiri, Uramaki and Makizushi served with Japanese inspired pickles, Inari Tsumi, wakame salad and a selection of dips and soy.

The elevated casual dining experience is completed with aromatic cocktails, mocktails, sakés and wines as well as beautiful sweet things such as Artisan Vegan Gelato with flavours including Pistachio and Mango, Cheesecake, Miso Brownie and traditional Japanese dessert, Purin.

The No Catch Co

With 380 million portions of fish and chips eaten in the UK each and every year, The No Catch Co owners Kevyn and Ed realised they needed to open as many vegan fish and chip shops as they could.

Following the success of their Tofish made with GMO-free soy, the flagship vegan fish and chips restaurant and takeaway opened on Brighton seafront in 2021.

Main plates include Vegan Cod & Chips, Smoked Vegan Haddock & Chips, Tofish Burger & Chips, Jumbo Battered Saveloy & Chips and Battered Sausages & Chips.
The smaller plates like the Tuna Brioche 9″ Sub, Tofish Bites, Popcorn Prawnz and Calamari are perfect for dropping by for lunch and leave us wanting to come back at all times of the day to try them all.

Then there’s all the sauces to try from classic to classy with Chip Shop Gravy, Curry Sauce, Tartare, Aioli and Smoky BBQ Sauce.

Neighbourhood

Established since 2018, Neighbourhood is a modern vegan café and coffee shop based in the heart of the North Laine area just down from Brighton Station.

Using local suppliers and serving local products such as Horsham Coffee, Abyss Beer brewed in Lewes & Old Tree Brewery Kombucha, brewed in Brighton, you can eat in or outdoors or takeaway in a cosy place with organic coffee and good vibes for you and the planet.

There are a gorgeous array of vegan cakes and protein balls on offer, but for me it’s all about the Neighbourhood Breakfast with organic scrambled tofu, seitan sausage, avocado, portobello mushroom, potatoes and homemade beans on toasted sourdough.

The Potato Hash with chorizo veggie sausage, avocado, red peppers, onion, rocket, ketchup, mayo and seeds or Jackfruit Tuna Mayo Sandwich with gherkins, capers, rocket and pesto in toasted sourdough are also popular choices.

For the more adventurous there’s the Thai Chickpea Burger with peanut slaw, pickled cabbage, crispy onions in a seeded bun with fries and miso mayo or Loaded Fries with cashew cheese, chilli sauce, miso mayo, peanut sauce, pickled cabbage and jalapeños.

With Neighbourhood open daily between 10am and 4pm, it’s easy to drop by whenever you need a quick vegan food fix.
